Adaptation of Elite Temperate and Tropical Germplasm

We utilize early x late elite crosses, stratified mass selection, and modifications of the backcross technique.

Original GEM (2000)       Adapted GEM (2006)

We have defined ‘EarlyGEM’ as the long-term and continuous effort to incorporate GEM (USDA-Germplasm Enhancement Maize Project) elite germplasm into the U.S. northern Corn Belt. The general objective is to determine the suitability of 25% GEM backcross lines for use as grain hybrids in the northern Corn Belt. Parent project, 4296-5050-1510 ‘EarlyGEM: Incorporating GEM Elite Lines in Early Maize’, has determined the usefulness of GEM material in the northern Corn Belt. Late-temperate and tropical derived maize germplasm are already adapted to ND based on the efforts involved in this project since 2000. We have produced thousands of BC1:S1 lines with ND2000 as the recurrent parent. This is the first research devoted to germplasm enhancement with tropical material in the northern Corn Belt.
