Another Example

We want to determine the family size required to distinguish a 3:1 ratio from a 9:7 ratio.

n = family size

H(a) 3:1 = a2:a12 H(b) 9:7 = b2:b1
Q = 1/4, 1-Q = 3/4 Q = 7/16, 1-Q = 9/16
Q = a1 Q = b1
Var (a1) = a1a2
                 n
Var(b1) = b1b2
                n

a = 0.025 with a one tailed test so t = 1.96

=  1.96(0.929)  = 9.711
       0.1875

n is equal to (9.711)2 = 94.3~94 individuals. This is the same result as before using the square root of (l1l2).
