COURSE DESCRIPTION: History, growth, and development; soil, fertility, weed, insect, and disease management; cultivars; harvesting, storage, and processing of sugarbeets. Prereq: PLSC 110 or 210

GENERAL COURSE OBJECTIVE: To present optimum sugarbeet production practices based on the latest research.

RATIONALE: The Red River Valley and southwestern Minnesota region is the largest sugarbeet producing area in the United States with about 630,000 acres. Students who will work in any capacity with sugarbeets will benefit from this course. In addition, most knowledge learned in this course is transferable to other crops.

LEARNING OBJECTIVES: Upon completion of PLSC 350, students will be able to:

  1. Characterize the history, growth, and development of the sugarbeet crop and sugarbeet industry.
  2. Compare and contrast soil, fertility, weed, insect, and disease management strategies used by sugarbeet growers.
  3. Explain the harvesting, storage, and processing of sugarbeets.

GRADING:
  90% or greater of total points guarantees an A
  80% to < 90% of total points guarantees a B
  70% to < 80% of total points guarantees a C
  60% to < 70% of total points guarantees a D
