The District includes the Prairie Wetlands Learning Center, which is an educational facilty that focuses on the ecology and provides a haven for wildlife and the opportunity for visitors to learn the significance of the wetland ecosystem. The Center, located just south of Fergus Falls, MN., contains exhibits and offers programs for the general public and visiting groups. There is a large amount of trails which provide opportunties for wildlife viewing as well as hiking, bird watching, photography, fishing, and berry picking.
The Center is includes 325 acres of native and restored prairie with 28 distinct wetlands. The land is actively managed for both wildlife and people. Scheduled prescribed prairie burns promote diverse plant and animal populations, and water control structures allow the staff to control water levels in the wetlands.
The buildings are completely accessible for people with disabilities and include classrooms, an exhibit area, breakout lounges, a kitchen, dining hall and administrative offices. A 10-room dormitory accommodates up to 80 students, chaperones or teachers, and college environmental education interns. |
