REU Summer Research Experience for Undergraduates, University of Arizona - Tucson, AZ - REU (Research Experience for Undergraduates) is a National Science Foundation-sponsored program wherein undergraduates receive a stipend (up to $5,760 or $480 per week for 10 to 12 weeks) to conduct independent research projects under faculty guidance and mentorship.

The School of Natural Resources at the University of Arizona (UA) has two openings for REU scholars for the summer of 2009. One position is for a collaborative study with Dr. Steve Archer (UA) and Dr. Susan Schwinning (Texas State University) investigating why some shrubs are more successful than others in invading and establishing in grasslands. Another position is for a collaborative study with Dr. Steve Archer and Dr. Dave Breshears at UA and collaborators at New Mexico State, Loyola University and the University of Kentucky examining how plant litter decomposition in deserts is influenced by interactions between radiant energy and wind and water redistribution of soil. In addition to their own investigations, REU scholars will participate in controlled environment studies on the UA campus; and in field studies at the Santa Rita Experimental Range just south of Tucson.   SUMMER SEASONAL - BIOLOGICAL TECHNICIAN (PLANTS) Chippewa National Forest, Deer River, Minnesota -

DUTIES: Rare plants field surveys; verify identification and locations of rare plants; inspect contractor completion of surveys; surveys for other rare species (we’ll train), such as goshawks, red-shouldered hawks, and songbirds; inventory noxious weed sites, and other duties. Typical plant species sought in our surveys includes orchids (e.g. fairy slipper; ram’s-head lady’s slipper; white adder’s mouth; bog adder’s mouth; club-spur orchid), grapeferns/moonworts (e.g. lanceleaf grapefern; goblin fern; blunt-lobed grapefern; pale moonwort; least moonwort), and many others.  Apply by April 3, 2009.

GIS Specialist/Landscape Ecology New Mexico State University/USDA-ARS Jornada Experimental Range Las Cruces, New Mexico.

RESPONSIBILITIES:
1) Assist in development of potential-based land classification and modeling systems for rangelands.

2) Process and analyze satellite imagery and aerial photography to map soils and vegetation. Current projects are in rangeland areas of the western U.S. and Mongolia.

3) Develop/maintain databases relating climate/soil/vegetation maps to GIS and field based data.

4) Training clients (natural resources managers) in the uses of maps and databases.

5) Field validation of maps and field measurements of vegetation and soils.

   
 
  On Campus Opportunitiy:  The Department of Soil Science received a significant contract from the NRCS for quality control editing and encoding of North Dakota Characterization Data that was sampled, analyzed, and compiled by North Dakota Agricultural Experiment Station researchers in the past.   Earnest and meticulous individuals are needed to carry out the task; knowledge of the Microsoft Access would be beneficial.  The NRCS is committed to insure that adequate training is available for people working on this project. Students will earn 8$/hr, but cannot apply these monies toward a Work-Study contract because the funding source is federal.
