VIDEOCONFERENCING UPDATE
Videoconferencing sites are now in our research extension centers, on campus,
in extension offices and in K-12 schools. The more than 180 N.D. sites can
connect with each other and with sites across the U.S. and around the world
using the same technology. This summer ND's Interactive Video Network (IVN)
system changed its technology so the systems are identical and can easily
"talk" with each other.
Because of the many sites and variety of applications, individuals who want
to use the equipment must take the responsibility for scheduling and complete
most of the process themselves. Check Ag Comm's videoconferencing Web site at
http://www.ag.ndsu.nodak.edu/agcomm/videoconf/videoconferenci ng.html to learn
details for scheduling.
Training is available for anyone interested in learning to use the equipment
and schedule it properly. Contact Lynette Flage in Ag Comm at 265-5200 or Cheryl
Thompson with IVN at 231-7876 to set up a training session.

WEB PAGE HEADER INFORMATION
The page title, keywords and page description should be in the header of all
Web pages. Your browser will display the page title in the very upper lefthand
corner. This information is used by search engines to identify your document.
To enter these variables (when using Microsoft FrontPage), right click
anywhere on the page and select 'page properties.' Enter the title under the
'general' tab. Enter the keywords and description under the 'custom' tab. Click
in the 'User variables' box and select add; enter 'keywords' in the name box
then enter select words from your document in the 'value' box. The HTML code
will look something like this after you have entered these three options:
<head>
<title>Wheat Leaf Rust</title>
<meta NAME="keywords" CONTENT="wheat leaf rust, wheat yields,
leaf rust, spore, rust, fungus, pustules, uredinia">
<meta NAME="description"CONTENT="Profitability of Fungicides
for Wheat Leaf Rust Control, Wheat Leaf Rust">
</head>
These variables will make your Web page easier to find and look more
professional when your page is displayed. See the Metatags article on the Computer
Support Page for additional information on tags.

WRITE THE RIGHT WORD
In continuing Gary Moran's focus on writing, here are three recent examples
of grammar gaffes. Can you identify the problems and offer a correct version?
* There's a feeling one gets with a vision for their financial future. (from
a radio ad)
Sentences (paragraphs, articles and publications too) need to have a
consistent "voice" throughout. Here "one" is singular,
"their" plural. To make writing easier, use all plural to avoid the
he/she confusion and to keep the voice consistent -- children, farmers, decision
makers, etc.
* A group of citizens wants the district to change it's name to "Devils
Lake Public Schools - Home of the Satans." (from an Associated Press story)
"It's" is a contraction for "it is" or "it
has." "Change it is name?" I don't think so. Never use an
apostrophe unless "it is" or "it has" can be substituted.
And by the way, "wants" is correct even after "citizens"
since the subject of the sentence is the singular "group." The test?
Leave out the prepositional phrase. "A group wants the district..."
* They're only manufacturer is in Hong Kong. (from a newspaper article)
Here's where spell or grammar check may point out an error. But did the
writer mean "Their only manufacturer is in Hong Kong" or "They
are only manufactured in Hong Kong"?
