Turf Management/Ornamental Plants Field Day at NDSU on Aug. 2

The NDSU Extension Service and NDSU’s Department of Plant Sciences will hold a turf management/ornamental plants field day Saturday, Aug. 2 from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. The topics will be of interest to a varied audience, ranging from weekend warriors to athletic field caretakers and landscapers.

Events will start at 8 a.m. with coffee, juice, doughnuts and bug spray, followed by opening remarks from Ron Smith, a NDSU Extension Service horticulturist. The participants will then be able to choose from three different tours that will cover different horticultural and turf management aspects.

Group A: Deying Li, head of NDSU’s Sports and Urban Turf Grass Management program, will cover topics relating to turf weed and feed studies, root stimulation, turf disease control and cultivar trials.

Group B: Smith will focus on athletic field turf management and maintenance.

Group C: Smith and Barb Laschkewitsch, an NDSU agriculture research specialist, will stress home lawn care, ornamental plants and vegetables..

The rest of the schedule includes:

9:45 Turf management equipment demonstrations; 10:15 Turf weeds/disease/insect pests identification tour on campus; 11:00 Tour Fargo Public Golf Course; 12:00 Lunch (cost of lunch is included in registration fee.)

Afternoon presentations will include a turfgrass and ornamental plants diagnostic workshop and a turfgrass management workshop and roundtable discussion.

Pre-registration fees are $50 for vendors and $15 for non-vendors. At-the-door registration fees the day of the event are $75 for vendors and $25 for non-vendors. For more information contact Ron Smith at (701)231-8161 or Barb Laschkewitsch at (701)231-7484.
