Change Agent States for Diversity Conference Call

June 17, 2003

Participants: Rita Ussatis, Sandra Holbrook, Sharon Anderson, Eugene Berry, Roger Haugen, Scott Knoke, Elizabeth Demaray, Duane Hauck, and Karen Zotz.

Professional Development Committee

Dick Hanson is available to present with Sandy at the 2003 Fall Conference on the topic of harassment. Sandy asked for two hours, divide the total group in half, offer the same session twice. Suggested titles include: "Do You Know What You Really Said?"

Professional Development Committee suggested we offer some optional outings for a cultural experience during conference, such as: ethnic restaurant, producer who raises/grows ethnic foods for the North Dakota audiences. Duane Hack offered to work with Rita Acetose. Rita will let Duane know the time line for getting the program set-up. Karen offered her home for 6-8 people to experience a catered ethnic meal.

National Diversity Conference 2005

Gene Berry volunteered to serve on the planning committee for the National Diversity Conference. Karen will send his name, address, phone number and e-mail address to Marilyn Corbin, Penn State University.

Anti-Racism Training

Gene Berry volunteered to conducted an Anti-Racism training. Catalyst team decided to use this training as orientation for new catalyst team members and for the Extension Leadership Team professional development. Selected Tuesday, September 9, 2003, for the training, from 8:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Gene with check with Kathy Cummings to see if she is available to team teach with him.

The ND Catalyst Team will meet on September 8th beginning with dinner with the Extension Leadership Team followed by a business meeting. Karen will ask Kris to check on space at the Alumni Center (first choice) for September 8th and 9th.

Organizational Change

September Extension Leadership Team meeting topic for discussion: Diversity in Performance Appraisals.

To begin the discussion the Extension Leadership Team needs to consider (but not limited to) the following:

professional development plan incorporation of diversity;

Plan of Work and diversity efforts;

Organizational Management/Personal Core Competencies in-service options included in professional development plan (what do we offer staff?).

Resources for Professional Development

Sandy Holbrook and Gene Berry volunteered to conduct searches for valid/research based resource materials that staff might choose for a professional development self-study. They will focus their search on basic readings on race/gender. Target date to send information to Kris Holt is September 1. Self-study offerings will be posted on the ND CASD web site and on the professional development competency list for Organizational Management.

ND CASD Outreach

1. Vice President Council Retreat and Department Chairs’ Retreat (Roger and Duane, Gene, Sandy and Karen).

2. SBARE September Meeting: ask for 10 minutes on the agenda to talk about the ND CASD project.

3. Higher Education Diversity Council: Sharon met with them and talked about our logic model/program plan and our accomplishments to date.

4. Sioux City Follow-Up Meeting

5. Turtle Mountain Community College collaborations. First meeting was held with the Turtle Mountain faculty on April 29, 2003. There are more opportunities for partnerships.

Turtle Mountain has requested a curriculum in Natural Resources. The college wants to be able to refer students to us for transfer into our Natural Resources program. Also conducting a summer program for high school students.

Turtle Mountain is also interested in the following subject matter areas: horticulture, food safety. Both Ron Smith and Julie Garden-Robinson have provided preliminary information to the college.

We have also connected Turtle Mountain faculty with John Nowatski and Angie Milakovic for technology and GIS/GPS information.

Turtle Mountain faculty plan to visit NDSU in the fall 2003. Marsha Azure is the point person for Turtle Mountain. We need to include President Chapman on the program.

Candeska Cikana Community College, Devils Lake: Sharon is in contact with their president to schedule the Extension Leadership Team for a visit in August 2003.

6. North Dakota State University CASD Web Site

The web site is linked to the other consortium states who have web sites. Also linked to the National Diversity web site. We will continue to update the web site.

University of Missouri - Columbia offers Hispanic training. We will link to these sites also.

Next Meeting: September 8 and 9, Fargo.
