INTRODUCTION: The North Dakota State University Daylily Garden is an official display garden of the American Hemerocallis Society. This outstanding collection features over 1100 daylily cultivars. Most cultivars are considered historical or pre-1970 cultivars. The Dickinson Research Extension Center was very fortunate to receive bare root plants of many cultivars.
METHOD: Daylilies were planted September 15 & 29, 2006. Bulbs were planted in rows with 2ft. spacing, in nursery establishment bed settings. Plants were watered on an as needed basis before freeze up.
Some of the cultivars were not planted because of the poor condition of plant clumps. They were stored in a refrigerator for a substantial period of time. The extent of winter survival may be affected by this extended time in storage. Eventually daylilies that survive will be moved to other locations on the Dickinson Research Extension Center grounds.
