Welcome to DREC Horticulture Hi-Lites

Introduction

After 34+ years of work with the NDSU Extension Service, I decided it was time to pursue new job adventures. This change brought me to the Dickinson Research Extension Center. I have been employed on a part-time basis since late May to plan, coordinate and supervise DREC horticulture projects. "Hi-Lites" is a new feature that is available at the DREC website.

Since pictures are work a thousand words, digital photos will be used frequently to provide info and Horticulture Hi-Lites updates. This site will focus on timely topics, featured plants, sharing of resources that provide helpful horticulture information and many other emerging topics. Readers are welcome to suggest weekly topics to consider. [email]

Raised Beds

An ornamental planting of annual flowers is a regular practice. In this 2005 DREC planting, note the use of plant diversity, dramatic colors and use of bed focal points.

Dogwood (front) & Shrub Roses (back)

Cornus alba "Bailhalo - Ivory halo dogwood" introduced by Bailey Nurseries. Dogwood is a compact selection of variegated dogwood with a height of 5 to 6' and a spread of 5 to 6' compact or rounded growth.

Shrub roses are very hardy and do not require winter protection.
