The NDSU Extension Service is hosting a seminar you can view on the Web on November 13, 2001 at 10:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. entitled: 

"Obolensk: An Inside Look at Russia's Biological Warfare System".

Dr. Charlie Stoltenow, Extension Veterinarian for North Dakota State University just returned from a two-week scientific exchange program at Obolensk, Russia. Obolensk is the home of the State Research Center for Applied Microbiology and was and is the research unit for bacteria within the Russian biological warfare system. Bacteria present in this facility include anthrax, plague, and tularemia.

Dr. Charlie will be presenting his experiences and impressions of the Russian biological warfare research center and also the implications and ramifications of Russia entering a free-market enterprise system.

All NDSU faculty and students are invited to attend the seminar at the NDSU Century Theater in the Memorial Union.  A live broadcast (via the Web) of the seminar will be linked from this page just prior to the seminar.  Internet participants can ask questions during the seminar by calling 231-8087.

Fear of exposure to anthrax is a legitimate concern in some situations, but NDSU extension veterinarian Charlie Stoltenow says the actual risk is extremely low.
