SUNFLOWER

North Dakota State University does not have an active Sunflower breeding program and has not recently released any Sunflower varieties.  Early efforts resulted in one variety release:

SUNDAK Sunflower

Sundak, developed under the designation ND721 and released in 1973, was the first sunflower variety  developed and released by NDSU and USDA.  Sundak was an open pollinated variety developed from a composite of 98 presumably homozygous, rust-resistant, second generation hybrids which trace to 32 individual rust-resistant plants selected from the variety 'Commander' in 1970 at Fairmont, ND. It was a confection variety released for its resistance to rust.  Sundak was slightly taller, had higher bushel weight and matured slightly later than Mingren and Commander. Seed size was comparable to Commander but smaller than Mingren.

Sunflower Inbred lines are currently being developed at the USDA Northern Crop Science Laboratory located on the NDSU campus at Fargo, ND.

Inventories and seed sales of the USDA Sunflower Inbred lines are handled through the NDSU Foundation Seedstock Project.  See the related link for descriptions of the available Sunflower Inbred lines or contact Foundation Seedstocks, Fargo, ND at (701) 231-8140 for further information.
