SAFFLOWER AGRONOMIC DESCRIPTIONS

FINCH Safflower

Finch was released by Montana in 1987 as a normal hulled birdseed variety for dryland production.  It is similar in height and maturity to S-208 but has better test weight.

HARTMAN Safflower

Hartman was released by Montana in 1981.   It has a striped hull, yellow flowers and is 1-2 days later maturing than S-208 or Sidwell.  Hartman has improved oil content, meal protein and disease resistance to Pseudomonas bacterial blight compared to Sidwell.

SIDWELL Safflower

Sidwell was a joint release by NDSU and MT in 1977.  It has yellow flowers with an occasional red segregate.  An average 1-day later maturity than S-208, it is slightly taller.  Plant is spiny with mostly striped-hull seeds which average 1-2% lower oil content than S-208.
