Mr. Bill Kuntz                                                                                                                            Mr. D. Zetocha

Enclosed are yield data and agronomic descriptions for two new Durum varieties and 2 new Oat varieties that will be released through the Seed Increase Program to County Crop Improvement Associations for the Year 2000. These varieties were brought before the Variety Release Committee on January 26, 1999.  They were approved for release by the Director, NDAES but there was not enough seed to release to the counties for the 1999 growing season.  Yield and agronomic characteristics for these 4 varieties are summarized in the accompanying tables.

Hoping to make seed allocations earlier than what has been experienced in recent years, please notify me or Paulette of your county interest. The accompanying information should be used in the planning process with your crop improvement board to determine if your county wants to ask for an allotment.  There may be other varieties released in January 2000 that will be offered to the counties in addition to these four varieties.  When information on additional varieties is available it will be distributed to you.

This information has also been placed on the Foundation Seed Web page.    Go to:
                          www.ag.ndsu.nodak.edu/aginfo/seedstock/
Look under "Seed Increase Program".   Please call or e-mail Paulette  (231-8067) or me (231-9633) to put your county on the Allocation Lists for any of these new releases.  I will post all responses to the Web page as was done last year.

Before making your request, let me emphasize the importance for some counties to take a hard look at how they request allocations of every new variety and then back out AFTER allocations are made. The increasing incidence of this tactic is undermining the county allocation system and may result in a re-evaluation and changes within the system.  Late cancellation of requests results in added expense to Seedstocks and the REC and often leaves bushels of a new variety unsold and sitting in a warehouse rather than being planted.

Also, it is important for the CCIA and the increase grower to understand that accepting an allocation for seed increase is a business decision which carries a certain amount of risk.  There are added costs associated with certified seed production compared to grain production.  That is part of the cost of doing business as a seedsman as opposed to being a grain farmer.  There is no gaurantee that the seed of the new varieties increased by the grower will sell.

If you have any questions, please call.  Feedback is always appreciated.

EBELTOFT OAT (ND910916):

EBELTOFT was released by NDSU in 1999. See Tables 1-2 below. It is late maturing with ivory or off-white hulls, large kernels and a small percentage of thins. Yield is slightly higher than YOUNGS in ND trials under conditions that favor late maturity but bushel weight is similar. Protein content is higher than Canadian varieties. EBELTOFT heads 6 days later than YOUNGS. It is shorter with equal lodging resistance to JERRY. EBELTOFT is moderately resistant to crown rust and BYDV; resistant to prevalent races of stem rust; and resistant to smut in MN trials. Beta-glucan content is average.

Application will be made for Plant Variety Protection without Title V Restrictions.  The price of Foundation seed to the counties will be $12.40 per bushel.

YOUNGS OAT (ND900697):

YOUNGS was released by NDSU in 1999. See Tables 1-2 below.  It is white hulled with very large kernels and a low percentage of thins. Yield is equal or higher than any other named variety in ND trials. Bushel weight is lower than JERRY but higher than CDC BOYER. Protein content is slightly higher than Canadian varieties. YOUNGS heads 5 days later than JERRY but 3 days earlier than AC ASSINIBOIA. It is taller and slightly more prone to lodging than JERRY. YOUNGS is moderately resistant to crown rust and BYDV. It is resistant to prevalent races of stem rust and many smut races. Beta-glucan content is higher than any commercially-available cultivar adapted to ND.

Application will be made for Plant Variety Protection without Title V Restrictions.  The price of Foundation seed to the counties will be $12.40 per bushel.

LEBSOCK DURUM (D901442):

LEBSOCK was released by NDSU in 1999.  See Tables 1-5 below.  Its main attribute is high yield, test weight and semolina extraction. It is a stiff-strawed, day-length sensitive variety medium in height and maturity. Kernels size is medium with amber color, strong gluten (similar to BELZER, MONROE and RUGBY) and high semolina protein. Averaged across 6 ND locations from 1995-98, LEBSOCK was higher yield than all other ND varieties. It is resistant to stem and leaf rust; moderately resistant to Tan spot and Fusarium head blight.

Application will be made for Plant Variety Protection with Title V Restrictions.  The price of Foundation seed to the counties will be $17.55 per bushel.

PLAZA DURUM (D91080):

PLAZA was released by NDSU in 1999.  See Tables 1-5 below.  It is a late maturity, semi-dwarf variety with high yield potential. Averaged across 6 ND locations from 1995-98, PLAZA outyielded all ND varieties except LEBSOCK and MOUNTRAIL. Test weight is similar to MUNICH and VIC but lower than BEN and MAIER. It has strong gluten with semolina protein lower than MAIER and RENVILLE but similar to LLOYD. PLAZA is resistant to leaf and stem rust. Tan spot and Septoria ratings are lower than all other durum varieties and lower Fusarium head blight ratings than BELZER and RUGBY.

Application will be made for Plant Variety Protection with Title V Restrictions.  The price of Foundation seed to the counties will be $17.55 per bushel.
