The Variety Release Committee met on Friday, January 19 to consider several experimental lines proposed for release by the plant breeders. Enclosed are yield data and agronomic descriptions for two new soybean variety which were released and will be offered to the CCIA for 2001.  Varietal names are not fully cleared but the proposed names are shown below. The new releases are:

ND96-8929 Soybean (proposed name 'WALSH')
0.0 Maturity, same as Traill; 4 days earlier than Barnes. Yields are better than Traill on well-drained,
productive soils; but on wet, heavy problem soils with high pH, Walsh does not do as well as Traill.
Considering it earlier maturity, yield differences between Walsh and Barnes (Table 1) are expected.

ND96-1593 Soybean (proposed name 'SARGENT')
0.8 Maturity, equal to Lambert. Yields are better than Lambert, Pioneer P9092 and Surge. Iron chlorosis
tolerance is better than Surge and P9092 and about equal to Council. Rps6 gene gives phytophthora root rot
resistance to Races 1 to 4. Based on maturity, it is best adapted to Richland, Sargent, Dickey and Cass counties.

The seed price to the counties for these to releases will be $19.00 per bushel.

Please call Paulette or me at your earliest convenience to put your county on the Allocation Lists for these two new varieties.  There are tentative plans to have an Allocation Committee meeting at the time of the NDCISA Annual Meeting (Feb 5-6) so a timely response is essential.  If you have any questions, please call -- Feedback is always appreciated.

ND96-8929 Soybean Variety Release Information (proposed name 'WALSH')

ND96-8929 has the Rps6 gene for resistance to Races 1 thru 4 of phytophthora root rot.  ND96-8929 was developed from the cross of ND88-800 X Council.  ND88-800 has the pedigree Evans X Maple Amber.  ND96-8929 has purple flower color, grey pubescence, brown pods at maturity, dull yellow seed coat with yellow hila, indeterminate growth habit and high seed coat peroxidase.  ND96-8929 is a 0.0 maturity.

ND96-1593 Soybean Variety Release Information (proposed name 'SARGENT')

ND96-1593 has the Rps6 allele which confers resistance to Races 1 thru 4 of phytophthora root rot.  ND96-1593 was developed from the cross of ND88-800 X Council.  ND88-800 has the parentage Evans X Maple Amber.  ND96-1593 has white flower color, grey pubescence, brown pods at maturity, dull yellow seed coat with yellow hila, indeterminate growth habit and high seed coat peroxidase. ND96-1593 received a greenhouse iron chlorosis score of 77% compared to Council which received a score of 79% and Traill which received a score of 100%. ND96-1593 is a 0.8 maturity.
