Barnes Soybean
(Proposed name for Soybean Experimental Line ND95-931)
Description and Data Summary

BARNES soybean is classed as a 0.3 maturity and is intended as a replacement for Lambert and Council. It has the Rps6 allele that confers resistance to phytophthora root rot Races 1 to 4. It is currently the only NDSU variety with resistance to Races 3 and 4. Greenhouse evaluations show that BARNES is not as good as Traill but is similar to Lambert and Council for tolerance to iron chlorosis. BARNES yields equal to Lambert but is about 5 days earlier. BARNES is higher yielding than Traill and has yielded especially well in water-saturated, heavy-clay soils. BARNES was developed from a cross of ND88-800 X Pioneer 9061. ND88-800 has the pedigree Maple Amber X Evans. BARNES has purple flower color, grey pubescence, brown pod color, dull yellow seed coat, and buff hila. This line has high peroxidase seed coat activity.

Application will be made for Plant Variety Protection with Title V Restrictions. The price of Foundation seed to the counties will be $18.90 per bushel (60 lb unit).  A Research Fee of $0.50 per bushel will be assessed on sales of Registered and Certified seed.
