New Hard Red Winter Wheat Released by South Dakota

South Dakota State University has released a new (as yet unnamed) hard red winter wheat. A good supply of Foundation seed is available for planting this fall. The variety will not be released in North Dakota through the county crop improvement seed increase program but will be made available directly to North Dakota growers on a first-come, first-served basis through NDSU Foundation Seedstocks. ND growers wanting to order Foundation seed of this new variety should contact Foundation Seedstocks in Fargo (Galen Schroeder at 701-231-9633 or LeRoy Spilde at 701-231-8140) immediately. Cost of bagged, untreated seed will be $20.00 per bushel. A 25% non-refundable deposit is required at the time of the order. The balance can be paid at the time the seed is picked up. Seed will be available for delivery at the Agronomy Seed Farm at Casselton.

The variety is a red-glumed type similar to ‘Rose’ in maturity and height with superior winter hardiness and yield potential. Averaged over 3-years of statewide testing in SD yield trials (1996-1998), the variety was higher yielding than all other lines tested. Across locations and years, the variety has shown superior performance in situations where winter injury has been important.

It possesses a very broad disease resistance package, being resistant or moderately resistant to stem rust, leaf rust, tan spot, wheat streak mosaic and Hessian fly. It has shown field tolerance to head scab and common root rot. Straw strength is fair (slightly less and Arapahoe) and winter hardiness is equal to Roughrider. The parentage is 50% Arapahoe with the pedigree of Brule//Bennett/Chisolm/3/Arapahoe.
