Surge soybean is a 1997 joint release by the South Dakota Agricultural Experiment Station and the Minnesota Agricultural Experiment Station.  Surge (SD(M)92-1233) was derived from an F4 plant selected from the cross A86-204022 x Kato. A86-204022 has the pedigree Hack x Zane. Surge has purple flowers, gray pubescence, brown pod color, dull seed coat luster, yellow seed coat color, imperfect black hilum and indeterminate growth habit. Surge is about 3 days later than Lambert and 5 days earlier than Parker giving it a relative maturity of about 0.9. Surge has excellent yield for a late Group 0 variety and competes very well with varieties ranging up to 1.5 relative maturity. The variety is widely adapted across the tri-state region of South Dakota, Minnesota, and southeastern North Dakota.

Plant height is similar to Lambert.  Seed size averages about 20 g/100 seeds with good quality. At 44% protein, it also has higher protein than most varietes of this maturity and oil is approximately 20%. Surge has excellent emergence, lodging resistance and shattering scores. Iron chlorosis tolerance is average. It carries the Rps1 gene for resistance to phytophthora root rot resistance. Surge was released because of its excellent yield potential, relatively high protein and wide adaptability.  Application will be made for Plant Variety Protection (PVP) under Title V and can be sold only as a class of certified seed.
