Oxen hard red spring wheat was developed by the South Dakota Agricultural Experiment Station (AES) and released in February 1996. The line was tested in South Dakota as S0010 and originated from Pioneer Hi-Bred International germplasm SDB0089.

Oxen was derived from the cross SDY336A/SDZ004A. The pedigree of SBY336A is Waldron//Lundi/Justin/3/Arg 5/4Pioneer line W6744 and the pedigree of SDZ004A is Pioneer variety 2369/Len. Oxen is an awned, early maturing, semidwarf, similar to 2375 in maturity, slightly shorter, better in straw strength and less prone to shattering. Test weight of Oxen is less than 2375 but greater than Prospect. Oxen is moderately resistant to the prevalent races of leaf rust and resistant (R) to stem rust. Based on performance data, the Fusarium Head Blight (scab)) resistance of Oxen is similar to Butte 86 and slightly less than 2375 or Sharp. Protein content is similar to 2375 and Butte 86, whilethe milling and baking qualities of Oxen are excellent, similar to Grandin, which is the industry check.
