Hatton is a medium early, semi-prostrate (Type IIIA) pinto bean. It was released by the North Dakota Agricultural Experiment Station in 1995. It is the same maturity as Othello and is two days later than Topaz. Hatton has very good yield potential and has outyielded Othello by 8% in both ND and regional tests. Plant architecture ranges from near-erect to decumbent. Typical growth habit includes pods clustering near the base of the plant similar to Topaz. Hatton carries the bc1, bc2 genes for resistance to pathogroups I, II, III, IVa, IVb, and VII of bean common mosaic virus (BCMV). Hatton is rated moderately susceptible (MS) to bean rust. Seed of Hatton is the traditional pinto shape and color but is consistently larger than most pinto varieties.
Hatton is a PVP-protected variety and seed sale is regulated by the U.S. Plant Variety Protection Act with Title V restrictions.
