Frontier pinto bean was released by the North Dakota Agricultural Experiment Station in 1997. Frontier is a late maturing, high yielding pinto bean selected from the cross Px-057/'Sierra'. The seed of Frontier is large and similar in size to Fiesta. Seed has the traditional pinto coloration and yellow corona color. Frontier is late maturing, reaching the harvestable stage approximately 102 days after planting. It is 6 days earlier than Sierra and 3, 7, 9 and 8 days later than Chase, Othello, Topaz and Fiesta, respectively.

Frontier is homozygous dominant for the Ur-3 allele, conferring resistance to 39 races of rust, including the current populations of rust found in North Dakota. This variety also may avoid white mold damage because of its relatively upright architecture and late maturity. Frontier is homozygous for the recessive allele bc12, conferring resistance to pathogenicity groups I, II, III, and V and susceptibility to groups IV and XII, and delayed susceptible reaction to group VI. In spite of Frontier's late maturity, it exhibits good total plant dry down at maturity. Canning quality is similar to Sierra but slightly below that of Fiesta and Hatton pinto.

Application will be made for Plant Variety Protection (PVP) under Title V and can be sold only as a class of certified seed.
