Green and Yellow Foxtail (Pigeongrass) Control in Wheat

Foxtail species are warm season grasses. They are shallow rooted and will tolerate shading. They need warm moist soils to emerge. Small grains compete very effectively with green and yellow foxtail. Research at NDSU and University of Manitoba indicates that yield reductions are rare from foxtails emerging after wheat has reached the two leaf stage. A semi-dwarf Hard Red Spring Wheat was used and foxtail populations of 600 plants per square yard were studied.

Foxtails cause yield losses when they emerge prior to the two leaf stage of wheat. Harrowing can effectively control foxtail in wheat. Achieve, Puma, Discover,  Dakota, Sheyenne and Trifluralin are chemicals cleared for use in wheat to control foxtails.
