Annual Forages for Grazing

Early plantings of cereal crops, such as oats, barley, rye and wheat, will provide the early forage. Late plantings of annual grasses such as oats, millet and sudangrass can be made, but will not be ready to graze for 6 to 8 weeks after planting. Late planted oats is best suited to northern areas of the state, as it is a cool-season crop.

Cereal crops do best if grazing is delayed until plants are at least six-inches tall. Sundangrass growth should be 18 to 24 inches tall for cattle and 12 to 15 inches tall for sheep.
