Crops Cut for Forage May Post Nitrate Threat
When considering using drought-damaged grain crops for livestock forage be aware of the danger of nitrate poisoning to livestock. Drought-stressed crops often accumulate abnormal levels of nitrates and it is best not to feed small grain without getting it tested for nitrate. This can be done quickly and cheaply by the veterinary diagnostic laboratory at NDSU.
Obtain a representative harvest sample from five locations in the field. Mix the samples together and send a bread wrapper 3/4 full to NDSU Veterinary Diagnostic Lab, Van Es Hall, North Dakota State University, Fargo, ND 58105.
