Disease Problems White mold was the worst disease problem for 76% of survey respondents on 70% of their acres, followed by rust for 11% of respondents on 9% of their acres. White mold was the worst disease problem on 76% of Minnesota and 68% of North Dakota respondents' acres. This value is slightly less than reported for white mold in 1995 by North Dakota respondents, but is an increase from the 61% reported by Minnesota respondents in 1995. Rust was the worst disease problem on 4% of Minnesota and 11% of North Dakota respondents' acres. Root rot, bacterial blight and Alternaria were the worst disease problems on only a small percentage of respondents acres (Table 15). White mold was ranked as one of the three worst disease problems by Northarvest survey respondents on 78% of dry bean acres reported, the same as in 1995. Rust was ranked as one of the three worst diseases on 50% of respondents' acres, slightly higher than in 1995. Bacterial blight was reported as one of the three worst disease problems on 19% of dry bean acres reported, similar to 1995. Root rot was reported as one of the three worst disease problems on 10% of Northarvest respondents' acres (Table 16). White mold was cited as one of the three worst disease problems slightly more frequently in Minnesota than in North Dakota (81% of respondents' acres compared to 77% in North Dakota). Rust was cited more frequently in North Dakota than in Minnesota (55% of respondents' acres compared to 34% in Minnesota). Root rot was cited as one of the three worst disease problems twice as frequently in Minnesota as in North Dakota (17% of respondents' acres compared to 8% in North Dakota) (Table 16). White mold was ranked as the worst disease problem in all Minnesota and North Dakota districts. Rust was the second worst disease problem in MN3, ND1, ND3 and ND5. Root rot was ranked as the second worst disease problem in MN4 and MN5. Neither rust nor root rot were ranked very highly when compared to white mold (Table 17). White mold also ranked as one of the three worst diseases in all Minnesota and North Dakota districts. Root rot was reported as one of the three worst diseases, second only to white mold, in MN2, MN4 and MN5, a problem on 39%, 19% and 17% of respondents' acres, respectively. Rust was reported as one of the three worst diseases, second only to white mold in MN1 and all North Dakota districts, a problem on 60%, 68%, 51%, 56%, 58% and 41% of respondents acres, respectively (Table 18). The data indicate that white mold was a serious problem throughout the Northarvest growing area. Rust was more frequently cited as a problem in those districts where pinto beans were the dominant planted class. Root rot was more frequently cited as a problem in those districts where kidney beans were an important or dominant class.
