Use of Western-grown and Northarvest-grown Seed
Western-grown seed was the
most common seed source. Western-grown seed was planted on
61% of respondents' acres. Northarvest-grown seed was planted on 20% of respondents'
acres.
Both of these figures are slightly lower than in 1995, when 92% of respondents' acres were
planted
with one of these two seed sources. However, in 1996 8% of respondents' acres were planted
with
bin run seed, leaving 11% of respondents' acres not accounted for in the responses (Table
7).
North Dakota respondents
planted Northarvest-grown seed on 23% of their acres, while
Minnesota respondents planted Northarvest-grown seed on only 8% of their acres. ND3
respondents planted Northarvest-grown seed on 47% of their acres, similar to 1995. ND3 is
the
district that produces the most seed; thus, a significant portion of Northarvest-grown
seed appears
to have been used locally.

or
bin-run seed in 1996 in each Northarvest district.
