Production Problems Disease was reported as the worst production problem by 53% of Northarvest survey respondents on 52% of their acres. Disease was a greater problem in North Dakota than Minnesota, with 60% of respondents reporting disease as the worst production problem on 54% of their acres, but only 39% of Minnesota respondents reporting disease as the worst production problem on 45% of their acres. Disease was reported more frequently as the worst production problem in 1996 than in 1995, when 32% of respondents reported disease as the worst production problem on 38% of their acres (Table 13). The second greatest production problem was delayed planting, reported as a problem by 7% of Minnesota, 10% of North Dakota and 9% of Northarvest respondents on 6%, 10% and 9% of their respective acres. Emergence and stand was the third worst production problem for Minnesota respondents, who reported this as a production problem on 6% of their acres, followed by weeds on 4% of their acres. Weed infestation was the third greatest production problem in North Dakota, a problem on 7% of respondents' acres (Table 13). Disease, the worst production problem for Minnesota respondents, was especially severe in MN1, where 68% of respondents' acres were affected. The acres affected by disease in all other districts ranged from 22% to 32% of respondents' acres. Delayed planting was most serious in MN1 and MN3, where 8% of respondents' acres were affected. Weeds were most serious in MN4, where 12% of respondents' acres were affected (Table 14). Disease, the worst production problem for North Dakota respondents, was especially severe in ND4, ND1 and ND2, with 66%, 65% and 62% of respondents' acres affected, respectively. Respondents in ND3 and ND5 reported 42% and 41% of their acres affected by disease. Delayed planting, the second worst production problem, was especially severe in ND2 and ND4 with 21% and 16% of respondents' acres affected, respectively. Weeds, the third greatest production problem, were most severe in ND3 with 14% of respondents' acres affected (Table 14).
