Insect Problems Grasshoppers were the worst insect problem for 7% of Northarvest survey respondents representing 6% of the dry bean acres reported (Table 34). Grasshoppers were more frequently reported to be the worst insect problem by Minnesota respondents (10% of respondents representing 8% of Minnesota respondents' acres reported). The potato leafhopper was the worst insect problem for 3% of Northarvest survey respondents and 6% of Minnesota respondents representing 2% and 3% of respondents' acres, respectively. Grasshoppers were reported as the worst insect problem in MN1, MN2, MN5, ND1, ND2, ND3, and ND4 (Table 35). However, it was reported as the worst insect problem on less than 10% of respondents acres in all of the above districts except MN1, where 12% of respondents' acres were affected. The potato leafhopper was the worst insect problem in MN3, MN4, and ND5; it was the worst problem on 24% of respondents' acres in MN4. These data contrast to those for 1995, when the potato leafhopper was the most common insect problem and grasshopper concerns were limited. Insect Control Practices Insecticide use was very limited in 1996, as it was in 1995 (Table 36). Carbaryl was used on 0.9% of Minnesota respondents' acres and Dimethoate on 0.5%. Asana was used on 0.3% of North Dakota respondents' acres and Lorsban on 0.1%.
