Frequently
Asked Questions
Q? How do I reduce feed losses once I open the silage pile?
A: Dry matter loss occurs more rapidly when silage is exposed to oxygen. I suggest going
through this list to make sure you aren't losing more silage than
necessary from your bunker or silage bage...
- Remove at least 6 in./day or more from the face.
- Removal rates should never be lower than 4 in./day in the summer
and 3 in. the winter.
- Always close the bag after each feeding.
- Slice the silage from the top of the bucket loader and allow it to
fall to the floor.Tower silos:
- Remove at least 4 in./day from the surface.
- Feed into feeding station or feed room that is protected or covered
so wind will have little effect.
- Make sure all conveyors have covers, drop pans and liners.
