Symptoms of Root Rot in barley roots

Root Rot

Symptoms
Diseased seedlings have dark brown spots near the seed or stems below soil line. Affected plants may turn prematurely white. Kernels in the head are shriveled and roots are dark brown and rotted. Yields are often reduced even if disease is not well developed.

Caused by: Gaeumannomyces, Pythium, Rhizoctonia, Bipolaris

Control measures:

  • Rotation with non-host crops
  • For Bipolaris, use of resistant varieties
  • Use of fungicides
  • Reduction of infected stubble
  • Change in tillage practices
  • Optimisation of nutrition
