There are several methods to updating Windows.
- Automatic Updates
(RECOMMENDED) - This
method will allow windows to automatically check for new
updates and install them
for
you. This ensures
your computer is always up-to-date and also saves you the
hassle of manually running the updates. You
can access your updates settings by right clicking on 'My
Computer', 'properties', and 'Automatic Updates'.
- SUS - This method
is for on-campus use only. Similar to automatic updates,
SUS also makes sure that Windows is always up-to-date.
The difference is that SUS draws it's updates from a local
server instead of directly from Microsoft. This allows
local technicians and administrators to ensure your computer
does not install any updates that are incompatible with
your computer setup.
- Manual
Updates -
There are several methods for initiating manual updates.
To start a manual update you can:
- Click on
Start and select 'Windows Update'
- Open Internet
Explorer, select 'Tools', and click on 'Windows Update'
- Visit http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com
Once you have started the update, you will be taken to the
Microsoft Windows Update website. You may be prompted to
install a tool to evaluate your current update situation.
If so, click yes. The site will then check to see if new
updates are available. If they are, you will be given the
option to install them. Click on 'Install' to begin the process.
You may also be given a choice for quick installation or
advanced. If you see this, select the quick.
Windows will now begin to download and install the newest
updates. Please note that due to the requirements of some
updates, this method may need to be repeated 2 or more times
to get all the updates. Also be sure to restart your computer
after updating in order for them to take effect.
