As public institutions we all have legal statements that in some part say that we cannot discriminate. Public institutions have taken great strides to ensure that their facilities, publications, and other information is accessible in accordance with the 1990 Americans with Disabilities Act. The World Wide Web, up to now, has been overlooked when accessibility issues have been considered. Designing a page that is built according to the World Wide Consortium Guidelines will make your pages more ADA compliant, but they will also be more universally accessible to all browsers, now and in the future.

The Land Grant Training Alliance Web Site now has a new course on Web Site Accessibility: How to create, modify, and check your web pages to make them "universally accessible."

The purpose of these lessons is to teach the basic steps to create, modify, and check web pages for ADA compliance. However, do not think of these as ONLY making your web pages ADA compliant. Think of them as making your pages more universally accessible. Not all of your accessibility questions will be answered in this series; however, class objectives are:

1.Learn why web page accessibility is important.
2.Learn about barriers that web pages create for disabled users.
3.Learn how some special technologies work.
4.Learn to recognize potential problems and how to correct these problems.
5.See examples of HTML coding to make your web pages universally accessible.
6.Find resources to help check your web pages.
7.Figure out a "game plan" to make your web site compliant.
8.Learn about other resources you can use.
